Our colour options
Natural
A light, natural-timber look, making this a very versatile flooring option.
Coffee
A rich, golden colour; one of our best sellers.
Why Bamboo Elite Flooring
A wax coating is applied to the edges of the boards during manufacture, so that when the locking system is engaged, the tight join helps prevent water penetration in the event of minor spills.
Bamboo Elite can be installed as a “floating” floor (over an underlay) or as a “direct fix” glue-down floor. It comes in a low gloss finish with Treffert, (a German water-based polyurethane) applied – making it look very stylish and easy to keep clean. Like the compressed bamboo flooring range, Bamboo Elite can also be sanded back in the future (ie. in 15-20 years or so, depending on wear) to be re-finished like new again.
Top Quality
Bamboo Elite Flooring is all about clean lines and subtle elegance. With its smooth surface, warm hues, and classic 3-ply construction, this flooring is ideal for homeowners who want beautiful floors that go the distance. The wider 159mm boards offer a seamless, modern aesthetic, while the unique click-lock system makes for a snug, gap-free fit. With a durable, UV-hardened finish, you’re getting a top-quality flooring product that’s made to last—and made with the planet in mind.
Healthy & Easy to clean
If you’re after a healthy, low-maintenance home, Bamboo Elite Flooring ticks all the boxes. The anti-static surface helps reduce dust, allergens, and irritants—making it a smart option for allergy sufferers. Plus, it’s a breeze to clean: just a quick vacuum or damp mop is all it takes to keep your floors looking their best. The smooth, sealed finish means there are no grooves or gaps for dirt to hide in.
Made for NZ Climates
Bamboo Elite Flooring is engineered for New Zealand homes and conditions. With an ideal moisture content of around 8%, it offers excellent stability year-round—no matter the season. The sustainably sourced Moso bamboo used in Elite flooring is designed to handle fluctuations in temperature and humidity, which makes it a solid choice for our unique climate. It’s even suitable for use over underfloor heating (just keep it under 27°C).
Install Flooring Quickly and Economically
No glue, no nails, no stress. Bamboo Elite Flooring is made for fast, hassle-free installation. The boards click together with precision, whether you’re floating the floor over an underlay or choosing to glue it down. It’s DIY-friendly for confident renovators, or easy for professionals to lay at speed—saving both time and money. Installation / Care Instructions for “Floating” Bamboo Flooring >
Bamboo Elite flooring uses a click-locking installation system that provides a strong yet simple, floating floor installation method (which can be glued/direct fixed also). The boards easily and firmly lock together on all four edges, making installation simple and efficient.
The pre-finished bamboo flooring comes out of the box ready to install, with no unnecessary mess or fumes often associated with on-site finishing, sanding or polishing.
Plantation recommends floating our Bamboo Elite flooring over a waterproof membrane such as Roberts Harmony 3 in 1 Underlay, which is a 100% barrier to any moisture that may be in the sub-floor. The underlay also provides a thermal barrier and has strong sound reduction properties. We sell this in either 9m or 60m rolls (1.02 metres wide). We can also offer an eco-friendly underlay called “Strongbond” which is made from 95% recycled foam on a gold-foiled backing and comes in 10m rolls. The edges of this underlay need to be taped together to provide a 100% moisture barrier – we can provide the adhesive tape in 30m rolls.
Longer and wider bamboo boards (1960 x 159 x 15mm) – comes packaged in boxes of 8 boards, measuring 2.493sqm per box (weighing 24kgs). Made from vertical strips of bamboo laminated together across three layers, optimising stability – while providing a natural, durable and stylish floor. Available in coffee and natural colour with a low gloss finish. Stock available now!

General
Bamboo flooring is made from fast-growing, rapidly renewable bamboo – from the giant “Moso” bamboo species. Engineered for strength and sustainability, it offers a natural, timber-like feel that is incredibly hard and durable.
Yes. Plantation Bamboo flooring is made with the ideal 8-10% moisture content for NZ conditions, ensuring excellent stability across seasons.
Compressed bamboo flooring (also known as “Strand-woven bamboo”) is one of the hardest flooring types available—more than twice as hard as oak timber flooring. It resists denting and is ideal for both homes and light commercial use. See the “Janka” hardness rating, compared to timbers here.
Bamboo Elite flooring is not as hard as compressed bamboo flooring, but it’s still harder than Oak timber.
Choose from Natural, Coffee (carbonised), and Vanilla (Whitewashed) tones, in a low-gloss water-based polyurethane finish (for the compressed bamboo flooring), or natural and coffee colour in the Bamboo Elite flooring option. All of our bamboo flooring has a click-lock join on all four edges, ensuring the boards fit snugly together.
Bamboo is a natural product, so some variation from board to board, box to box can be expected. It is advised to mix boards from multiple boxes to create a pleasing, random appearance – all part of the beauty of bamboo.
Yes, bamboo flooring is considered “pet friendly” and well suited to normal family life. As the flooring is so hard it can generally handle dogs and pets running/sliding around on it without issue. This customer quote and photos says it all:
“We were a bit sceptical about how well it would hold up with our dog. He is rather big and often hyper!! But no matter how much he skids around he still hasn’t scratched the surface! Amazing really. All in all we are very pleased with the product and would recommend this to anyone!”
Tammy, Nelson
We source all of our bamboo products through our partner, MOSO Bamboo (moso.eu) – a Dutch world-leader in innovative bamboo solutions. MOSO contracts the best factories in China to make our bamboo flooring to strict European standards, in line with our New Zealand climatic conditions. There are over 7 million hectares of bamboo grown in China.
Sustainability
Absolutely. Bamboo is harvested on a 4–6 year cycle and regrows without replanting. As the fastest-growing plant on earth, it’s highly renewable and ideal for eco-conscious projects.
Yes — MOSO Bamboo’s products are supported by independent impact studies and eco-label certifications, including BREEAM, LEED and others.
No. The Moso bamboo species used in our products is not a part of the panda’s natural diet, so there’s no conflict with their habitat.
Bamboo absorbs more CO2 during its growth than it emits during production and transport, making it a carbon-negative building material — a big win for climate-conscious consumers.
Installation
Yes. Plantation Bamboo flooring uses a DIY-friendly click-lock system, so that the boards can lock firmly together on all four edges. We have good installation instructions and a video guide available on this web page. For glued installations or complex layouts, a professional flooring installer is recommended.
- Floating: Boards click together and sit on top of an underlay, “floating” – where the weight of the floor holds it down (cheaper, quicker and easier to install, or remove). The vast majority of customers prefer to float their bamboo flooring in New Zealand (we estimate over 95%).
Please see the important points to consider and prepare for in this homeowner/builder checklist
- Glued: Fixed to the subfloor with adhesive (firmer feel, more permanent).
Each suits different preferences and site conditions.
Yes, if installing the bamboo as a “floating” floor. Use acoustic and moisture-resistant underlay—especially over concrete—to improve comfort, insulation, and performance. We have two options of underlay available.
Yes. Both compressed bamboo flooring and bamboo elite flooring can be professionally sanded and refinished multiple times, depending on wear and depth. It is estimated that sanding wouldn’t be needed until after 15-20 years of use, depending on wear and tear of the floor.
Use a soft broom, vacuum, or damp microfiber mop with a neutral pH cleaner. Avoid excess water and steam mops.
Minor scratches can often be buffed out with Rice Bran oil or walnut oil. Deeper gouges in the bamboo flooring can be treated/filled with a wax wood filler, such as “Briwax wax filler sticks”. It is recommended to have felt pads on the feet of chairs and furniture to reduce the likelihood of scratching.
Our bamboo flooring has a wax coating on the joins, to help seal the boards and reduce friction when walked on. Normally there are no creaking noises when the flooring is walked on, unless the sub-floor is not level or has bumps in it, causing floorboard movement. Movement/friction of the boards leads to squeaking/creaking noises.
Matching stair nosings are available for our three compressed bamboo flooring options (in natural, coffee and vanilla colours) – but not bamboo elite flooring.
The nosing profile looks like this, and connects to the bamboo flooring:
Also, our bamboo panels can be custom-fabricated into stair treads – see photos in gallery here.
Durability
Yes, but it’s not fully waterproof. The bamboo flooring has multiple layers of sealer and polyurethane to protect it. Wipe up spills promptly. Installation in bathrooms is not recommended unless carefully managed (well-ventilated, caulking between boards). The warranty does not include bathrooms.
Yes. Kitchens would be one of the most popular rooms to have bamboo flooring – see lots of photos in our galleries here. Ensure good ventilation and avoid any pooling of water. For kitchens, install cabinetry first and flooring after for best results.
We have had our bamboo flooring tested to meet E3/AS1 requirements (of the NZ Building Code), and have a joint sealer product available, called “Unika ClicSeal” for completely sealing the flooring near water sources, if required (a requirement of E3/AS1). More info on E3/AS1 here.
As with most timber floors the severity of the flood will dictate the damage to your bamboo flooring. Generally, if there is significant flooding, the floor will most likely need to be replaced (most often via an insurance claim). However, the waxed board edges and the polyurethane finish around the board, offer some water resistance if water is cleaned up promptly.
All timber floors respond to environmental changes. Exposure to extreme temperatures and humidity can negatively affect your bamboo floor’s overall performance. Plantation bamboo flooring is manufactured with around 8-10% moisture content (to suit New Zealand’s climate). It is recommended that air humidity level for bamboo flooring to perform at its best is between 40-65% relative humidity.
Only if poorly installed or exposed to excess moisture (a moisture imbalance between the top and bottom of the flooring causes cupping, which is quite rare). Always allow proper acclimatisation, use moisture barriers, and follow install guidelines.
Yes – if temperature remains below 27°C and the system is regulated. Refer to Plantation’s underfloor heating guide.
Yes. It’s great for allergy sufferers — easy to keep dust-free without harsh chemicals (a “low VOC” flooring option).
We offer a 25 year warranty for residential and 10 years for commercial use. See the warranty terms here.
