General Bamboo FAQ’s
We source all of our bamboo products through our partner, MOSO Bamboo (moso.eu) – a Dutch world-leader in innovative bamboo solutions. MOSO contracts the best factories in China to make all of our bamboo decking, flooring, cladding and panels to strict European standards, in line with our New Zealand climatic conditions. There are over 7 million hectares of bamboo grown in China.
Some of the Plantation Bamboo team have visited China and the factories several times now, to see for ourselves the production methods, facilities, people involved and how the bamboo is grown – and we were impressed!
Plantation Bamboo is a New Zealand family owned and operated business, led by Steve and Kim Roughan, along with their son Josh and four other passionate team members. As New Zealand’s only specialist building-related bamboo importer and supplier, the Plantation Bamboo team is well equipped and experienced to help with any aspect relating to the use of this amazing rapidly renewable and sustainable bamboo resource.
Absolutely. Bamboo is a highly sustainable material due to its rapid growth cycle (harvestable in 5-6 years), regenerating root system, and high carbon sequestration capability. Plantation Bamboo products are sourced from MOSO Bamboo, a world-leader in bamboo innovation, sustainability and quality.
Environmental Sustainability
- Rapid Growth: Bamboo can grow up to 1 metre per day and is harvest-ready in just 4–6 years, compared to 20–100 years for hardwood trees.
- Low Environmental Impact: Bamboo regenerates from its root system, eliminating the need for replanting and reducing soil erosion.
- Carbon Sequestration: Bamboo absorbs more carbon dioxide and releases more oxygen than equivalent tree species.
- Sustainable Harvesting: Many bamboo products, like those from Plantation Bamboo, are sourced from certified plantations, ensuring responsible forestry practices.
Exceptional Strength and Durability
- Strand-Woven Bamboo: Especially in flooring, decking and cladding, compressed bamboo (also known as strand-woven bamboo) is harder than most hardwoods (rated around 14–15 kN on the Janka hardness scale), making it highly resistant to dents, scratches, and wear.
- Composite-Grade Performance: Bamboo decking and cladding, when thermally treated and compressed (e.g. Plantation Bamboo X-treme range), compete with or outperform composite materials in weather resistance and dimensional stability.
Versatility and Aesthetic Appeal
- Natural Beauty: Bamboo offers a warm, natural and organic look with unique grain patterns
- Design Flexibility: Available in a variety of finishes, colours, and profiles, suitable for floors, walls, decks, ceilings, cabinetry, and more
- Modern Appeal: Perfect for contemporary, eco-conscious interior and exterior design trends.
Cost-Effectiveness
- Lower Material Cost: Compared to premium hardwoods like oak, walnut, or teak, bamboo is generally more affordable
- Reduced Labour Costs: Click-lock or modular/clip systems (common in Plantation Bamboo’s product line) make bamboo easier and faster to install, reducing installation costs
Low Maintenance
- Comparable to Hardwood: Requires sweeping, occasional damp mopping, and protective pads for furniture.
- Heat-Treated Options: Plantation Bamboo X-treme decking and cladding products thermally heat-treated to resist mould, rot, termites, and UV degradation, often outperforming timber and composite materials in harsh climates.
Health and Indoor Air Quality
- Low-VOC Products: Plantation Bamboo flooring and panels often meet or exceed indoor air quality standards (e.g., E1 formaldehyde emission levels).
Naturally Antibacterial: Bamboo is less prone to dust accumulation and microbial growth than carpet or some other materials.
Yes, you can view our range of products at our three showrooms/display stands – in Auckland, Christchurch or Wellington (Kapit coast). See the addresses here.
You can get a quote from one of our sales team and order directly from them – and either collect your order from our Auckland or Christchurch warehouses – or we can freight to most addresses around New Zealand.
Many DIY’ers successfully install their bamboo flooring or decking themselves, once purchased from us – but we can normally help find an experienced installer if required. Many customers make furniture, joinery, etc from our range of bamboo panels too.

This depends on what the bamboo product is. Our outdoor range of bamboo decking and cladding has been specially processed and made to handle extremes in heat, cold, rain and more – please see more information on the relevant product web pages. Our bamboo flooring is sealed and coated with many layers of water-based polyurethane, so it is well protected to handle water spills (even red wine!) and the like, providing spills are cleaned up promptly (as you would with other floor types).
The giant Moso bamboo species thrives in China’s climate and takes 4–6 years to mature before harvesting (with over 7 million hectares of bamboo grown there). It’s not commercially viable to grow and manufacture our range of bamboo products in NZ currently.
